NASP 2025 recap - Chaos, Zyn, and a Record-Setting Smackdown

Another one for the books, boys. The 19th Annual Summer Pentathlon delivered everything we’ve come to expect and then some.

For the first time ever, Chris Czyz missed an ASP. Not because he was scared of the competition but because Storm Amy had other plans for him in Ireland. Eighteen straight years of perfect attendance came to an end thanks to Mother Nature. We’ll raise a pint in his honor.

The Rookies

Two rookies stepped up with less than a week’s notice and absolutely brought it.

Sean Riedel showed up with fire in his belly and what seemed like every flavor of Zyn known to man.

Justin Helvey backed it up with top-tier trash talk and ice-cold darts that had Fancher rattled.

Both made noise all day and both earned guaranteed invites back next year.

It's Called Fashion

Jason Brunker lost his glasses early and spent most of the afternoon wearing prescription sunglasses indoors. He looked like the third Blues Brother and honestly, it worked, sort of…

Agents of Chaos

The dream of a three-peat for Barr and Brunker ended in back-to-back losses in shuffleboard and darts to Lizzet and Troy, otherwise known as Agents of Chaos. You are welcome, gentlemen.

The early Contenders Fade and New Champs dominate

Aaron Brooks and Josh Fancher wore the leader shirt proudly after the first event, golf, before their championship hopes faded fast.

Worth noting that Fancher’s preferred partner, Greg Brown, did finish second along side his partner Blake Ferguson. Also worth noting that it was a distant second behind a commanding performance from Tim Delaca and Nate Mascarenas, who set a record by winning four of the five events for a total of 21 points. Some would call it domination. Others might bring up that Tim golfed on the wrong holes during his pre-golf round or took a liberal interpretation of the Delaca Rule. I won’t be one of those people. Congratulations to Tim and Nate on an all-time performance.

The Lone Wolf

Shawn “Spud” Mascarenas deserves his own chapter for going it alone this year. Watching Spud 1 and Spud 2 battle it out on the bowling lanes was worth the price of admission. He didn’t make much noise in the final standings, but the effort and entertainment value were elite. Good work mi hijo.

Thank you

Big thanks to everyone who gave up their Saturday for the shenanigans. Special shoutout to Greg Brown for flying in from Florida, and to everyone who traveled to make it happen.

Strunk, I know you had a long drive from BFE. Pauletto, Peter, and Javin, you didn’t light up the scoreboard, but your presence was felt all day with good vibes and camaraderie. Thank you.

I also know there were kids’ baseball games and a dozen other Saturday things you could have been doing. The fact that you still showed up to compete and make this what it is means a lot. Much appreciated.

Nineteen years is wild. What started as a Saturday hang with the boys has turned into a ridiculous, awesome tradition that keeps getting stronger.

a look towards the future

Next year marks the big 2-0. Not sure yet what we’ll do to make it special, but rest assured, we’re already scheming. The date is locked: Saturday, September 19, 2026. Put it on your calendar now and start training. If you’re planning any overseas adventures, maybe build in a day or two buffer just in case.

Year 19 in the books. The chaos continues. The stories grow taller. See you all at 20.

Congrats to Tim and Nate!
